Junior Preschoolers are children whose language and motor skills permit them to follow more complex directions and do many things by themselves. At this stage, children begin to learn to resolve conflicts with less adult intervention. Self-esteem is developed through praise of the child's efforts and through reinforcement of a positive self-image that is fostered by encouragement, repeated successes with age-appropriate activities, and loving surroundings. This is a transition period in which children are beginning to master the skills that signal the beginning of self-sufficiency. Verbal and social skills are emphasized and potty training is introduced.
