Common Ground Child Care Center was founded in 1972 to create high quality programs for Reston area families. Today, we are the highest rated, state-licensed center for infants through 12 year olds in Fairfax County according to Northern Virginia Magazine,* and were awarded four stars through the Virginia Quality program, the highest rating giving to any Northern Virginia preschool. We provide a nurturing, engaging, and diverse environment that enhances natural curiosity and facilitates educational growth for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. Our programs include full-time infant/toddler care, full-time and part-time pre-school, and before- and after-school care, as well as an enriching summer camp, for elementary school aged children (K-6th grade).
- Value every child and encourage emotional, social, physical, and cognitive development.
- Provide a nurturing, engaging, and diverse environment that enhances natural curiosity and fosters educational growth.
Common Ground provides every child an age-appropriate environment where they are free to observe, think, and appreciate the world around them in their own unique ways. We believe teachers have a responsibility to help each individual child achieve a high level of self-esteem, master self-help skills, and develop self-discipline, and therefore incorporate appropriate teaching moments on these skills throughout the year. As part of our child-first approach, transitions between rooms are made in consultation with parents, and are primarily based on each child’s developmental readiness, verses simply using age and/or potty training status.
As a non-profit organization, the Center has an all-volunteer Board of Trustees who are elected and entrusted with making overarching management and financial decisions. The Board of Trustees ensures Common Ground operates to achieve its mission now and for future generations. Day-to-day operations and educational program development are managed by the Common Ground Director.
As a non-profit, family oriented center, Common Ground relies on parent involvement through volunteering. Parents read in classrooms, chaperon field trips, organize center events, serve on the Board of Trustees, and more. Upon enrolling in the center, each family agrees to provide at least 10 “parent hours” to Common Ground a year. This long tradition of parent volunteers fosters the strong sense of community at Common Ground.
*Northern Virginia Magazine published two articles assessing day cares and preschools. The 2014 “Top Day Care Centers / Preschools” lists “centers whose staff and facilities go above and beyond both the state’s licensing requirements and the average center in Northern Virginia.” The 2010 article graded centers from across Northern Virginia. Common Ground Child Care Center is listed on the “Top Day Care / Preschool” and received an excellent grade in the 2010 assessment.
