Overview

vsqi4starCommon Ground Child Care Center was founded in 1972 to create high quality programs for Reston area families. Today, we are the highest rated, state-licensed center for infants through 12 year olds in Fairfax County according to Northern Virginia Magazine,* and were awarded four stars through the Virginia Quality program, the highest rating giving to any Northern Virginia preschool. We provide a nurturing, engaging, and diverse environment that enhances natural curiosity and facilitates educational growth for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. Our programs include full-time infant/toddler care, full-time and part-time pre-school, and before- and after-school care, as well as an enriching summer camp, for elementary school aged children (K-6th grade).

Mission

  • Value every child and encourage emotional, social, physical, and cognitive development.
  • Provide a nurturing, engaging, and diverse environment that enhances natural curiosity and fosters educational growth.

Approach

Common Ground provides every child an age-appropriate environment where they are free to observe, think, and appreciate the world around them in their own unique ways. We believe teachers have a responsibility to help each individual child achieve a high level of self-esteem, master self-help skills, and develop self-discipline, and therefore incorporate appropriate teaching moments on these skills throughout the year. As part of our child-first approach, transitions between rooms are made in consultation with parents, and are primarily based on each child’s developmental readiness, verses simply using age and/or potty training status.

Organizational Structure

As a non-profit organization, the Center has an all-volunteer Board of Trustees who are elected and entrusted with making overarching management and financial decisions. The Board of Trustees ensures Common Ground operates to achieve its mission now and for future generations. Day-to-day operations and educational program development are managed by the Common Ground Director.

Parent Involvement

As a non-profit, family oriented center, Common Ground relies on parent involvement through volunteering. Parents read in classrooms, chaperon field trips, organize center events, serve on the Board of Trustees, and more. Upon enrolling in the center, each family agrees to provide at least 15 “parent hours” to Common Ground a year. This long tradition of parent volunteers fosters the strong sense of community at Common Ground.

Memberships

The Center is a member of the Reston Child Development Council, the Virginia Preschool Initiative, and the Virginia Quality program.

*Northern Virginia Magazine published two articles assessing day cares and preschools. The 2014 “Top Day Care Centers / Preschools” lists “centers whose staff and facilities go above and beyond both the state’s licensing requirements and the average center in Northern Virginia.” The 2010 article graded centers from across Northern Virginia. Common Ground Child Care Center is listed on the “Top Day Care / Preschool” and received an excellent grade in the 2010 assessment.

Testimonials

My kids started at Common Ground when they were 3 and 5, having attended preschool at another school before. I especially like CG's program because the preschool curriculum offers more structure and Kindergarten preparation than the previous preschool, but is still very play-based. CG's classes have the perfect balance between academic preparation and play when compared with other preschools/daycares that are either too academic or too unstructured for my kids.

CG's classes have the perfect balance between academic preparation and play when compared with other preschools/daycares that are either too academic or too unstructured for my kids. My son is learning letters, writing, and other important pre-K academics, but he also has plenty of time for art projects and imaginative play with his friends. We love the balance at CG.

Common Ground Child Care Center is a wonderful, caring environment for our children and we feel incredibly blessed to be part of the family there. Our two children are thriving in an atmosphere of genuine love, warmth and kindness. Before enrolling we looked at many daycare centers in Reston and Herndon. What we feel sets Common Ground apart is the wonderful staff who provide such love and care to each child, recognizing what makes each of them unique and special and finding ways to nurture their little personalities. Many of those staff have been there for 10 years or much longer (almost 40 years in 1 case).

The curriculum is geared to ensuring children can enjoy being children through thoughtful playtime while also covering more than the simple educational basics. Our 2 year old son loves learning new Spanish words and then teaching us when he gets home! We are also impressed by the quality of the social skills the teachers encourage in the children who attend Common Ground: polite manners, collegiate behavior at mealtimes and in circle time, thoughtfulness and kindness to each other, the confidence to say 'no' when appropriate...

The location can be a challenge to find but the center nestles in a quiet, residential area close to Reston Town Center and has a large outdoor playground which is used as much as possible. Although many of the childcare centers in the surrounding area are housed in more modern buildings, Common Ground is spacious and has a relaxed, homely environment.

Most importantly, we have found a family here. We moved from overseas back to the USA but were entirely new to Virginia and knew no-one here. Most of our closest friends are families who we met at, or through, Common Ground and we enjoy play dates, activities and (now) vacations together. It has become a very special and meaningful place for us and provides us with so much more than a place to leave our children during working hours.

Before starting at Common Ground at age 3, our daughter had only been cared for by family. In researching daycare options, we looked forward to seeing her grow socially with kids her age and develop basic skills she'll need in kindergarten, but more than anything, we wanted a place where we could trust that she would be cared for by loving people, valued as an individual, and taught to be a good classmate and friend.

We found all of this at Common Ground. When she had trouble adjusting, her teachers made an individual plan to give her special attention when she was dropped off to help her ease into the day. There is a strong community feel to the place, she knows and is known by most of the staff, and the director has been accessible and personally responsive to our questions. Most of all, we are confident that her emotional, interpersonal, and academic needs are all in the hands of competent, trustworthy, and genuinely loving people.

Finding the "right" daycare for your child is stressful. There are so many important questions….Will my child be safe? Will they be loved? Will they learn? Will they be happy?….. Thankfully, Common Ground is amazing!

We came to Common Ground when my older daughter (now 6) was 16 months old after a horrible experience at another Reston day care/preschool. Common Ground restored my faith in daycare and I cannot thank them enough for the incredible care they have provided us. The center is truly a family and when I had my 2nd daughter (now 3), there was no question that she would also attend Common Ground!

Common Ground is a loving, family oriented day care, pre-school, and school-age center that we are SO happy to be part of. My daughter (almost 8) started there as an infant and attended full-time through pre-k. She and her classmates were all thoroughly prepared for elementary school. My son (now 4) also started as an infant and is having the same great experience.
