Our Junior Preschool room is for children 2 to approximately 3 years old. In this room, we teach children through exploration and discovery. Teaching is continuous throughout the daily art, music, creative play, reading time, and outdoor activities. Our Junior Preschool curriculum uses Preschool First to track the growth and progress of each child, which features a play-based curriculum and an online assessment resource. We also provide Spanish language instruction with the regular monthly tuition. Throughout the year, we take field trips to farms, playgrounds, community art programs, bookstores, and other destinations, providing exciting adventures and additional learning environments.
We emphasize and encourage children’s natural independence and desire to accomplish many tasks by themselves. We also teach children the tools to resolve conflicts with less adult intervention. Self-esteem is developed through praise of the child’s efforts and through reinforcement of a positive self-image that is fostered by encouragement, repeated successes with age-appropriate activities, and loving surroundings.
Our Junior Preschool room is an open classroom with multiple learning/playing areas. Areas include a hands-on science station, housekeeping, quiet reading, and block area. We serve meals family style, with teachers joining the students at the table.
Potty training is introduced. As with our infant and toddler rooms, Common Ground provides wipes to change children’s diapers; parents are responsible for providing diapers. Unlike many area centers, Common Ground does accommodate families that wish to use cloth diapers.
